The story takes us on a journey around some of the famous and less well-known special places in Cumberland:

  • Castlerigg stone circle, Keswick, CA12 4RN
Thought to be one of the earliest stone circles in Britain, in a dramatic setting surrounded by a ring of mountains

  • The ghost army of Souther Fell, Souther Fell
A well known Lakeland legend, reported in 19th Century guidebooks to the Lake District.

  • Blakeley Raise stone circle, Kinniside Common, CA23 3AQ
A stone circle that’s been reconstructed, probably in a different location, there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the details.

  • Smithy Beck longhouses, Ennerdale
Unusual double-wall houses in the forest. More information on the Wild Ennerdale historic sites guide

  • Great Gable memorial, Great Gable
Great Gable and 11 other mountains were gifted to the nation by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club as a war memorial in 1923. Two other mountains were gifted by private donors. The first public gathering on Great Gable was on 8th June 1924.

  • The boulder bothy, secret location!
This bothy was a well-kept secret until the advent of social media. Rumours say it has since been vandalised and no longer exists.

  • Elva Hill stone circle, Setmurthy, private land, no public access
A small stone circle on a rise of land looking down on Bassenthwaite and the river Derwent
